HISTORY: EQUI-STIM LEG SAVER®

The company was founded Apr. 22, 1998 in Vancouver, B.C., Canada. 

We have been treating horses for various injuries or ailments about nine months before that.  It was at that time we realized that we had a tremendous product on our hands but needed some improvement. 

We have been selling the EQUI-STIM LEG SAVER® since Jan. 1, 1999.  There are about 200 Leg Saver units treating horses all over the world. 

Since early in 1999 we have treated thousands and thousands of horses for hundreds and hundreds of owners and trainers for most injuries and ailment that exist. 

Our entire satisfied customers have treated thousands and thousands more.  We have attained about a 90% success rate in treating all the injuries or ailments that are listed later in this document. 

In the last eight months I have personally treated over 600 horses with a 100% success rate.  We have and will continue to improve on and expand our treatment protocols.

DEVELOPER

Gary DesRoches is the father of the LEG SAVER.  I am a Canadian horse veteran with 48 years experience in the Thoroughbred & Standardbred industry.  Born and raised on the West Coast of Canada I have been able to be working year around in the industry. I have been involved in every aspect of the racing industry.

In 1995 we purchased a thoroughbred yearling in the fall sale, which started to bow his tendon while in training the following summer. We did all the right things for the following year, with the problem getting worse.

The need for a remedy for a bowed tendon spawned the search for a method of rehabilitation. A TENS machine that was used for pain management was the first product I tried with very limited success. Laser, Ultra sound, Magnets and many others were tried but with mild short-term results or no results at all.

A break through came when we tried a cell stimulator used to enhance the healing of broken bones and damaged ligaments by the local NBA (GRIZZLIES) basketball team. The basis for this product was a fluctuating micro-current system using electro gel and rubber pads. With the use of the tissue stimulator with wires, electro pads and a little electro gel, I started to treat our horse and others. The results were acceptable.

This product had possibilities but I was still looking for something more efficient, stronger and quicker. I then tried a stimulator from Australia that was very good also in other ways. Using the best of both machines I was able to build, with further improvements and modifications, the best stimulator for the equine industry.

This process took another six months of trial and error to find the right combinations of frequencies and wavelengths.  It took another year to develop all the basic protocols.  I am still learning and will continue to learn in the future.

At the same time I was introduced to a book titled VETERINARY ACUPUNCTURE Ancient Art to Modern Medicine.  In this book a chapter written by Dr. Are Thoresen DVM of Norway on TING POINT THERAPY was the most enlightening article I have ever read.  I have read this article over one hundred times and every time I learn something that makes my protocols even better.

Dr. Thoresen has developed the TING POINT THERAPY and has written several articles on this new therapy as well as a book on alternative therapies titled ALTERNATIVE & COMPLEMENTARY VETERINARY MEDICINE.  Many practitioners have tried and endorsed his work.  I tried some treatments using this therapy and had the most remarkable results.

This therapy is the key to rehabilitating the injured horse easily and quickly.  TING POINT THERAPY is the base for all my success in treating with the EQUI-STIM LEG SAVER®Ô. Many practitioners worldwide are using this theory in conventional acupuncture with a great deal of success.

I spent 6 months researching and developing the most efficient effective therapeutic waveform for rehabilitating the injured horse with the LEG SAVER. We settled on an Equine Multi Micro-Current waveform that would form the foundation for the EQUI-STIM LEG SAVER®.

Once we had the system then we needed a further 12 months developing the most effective protocol for the treatments. We now had the ultimate system for the quick rehabilitation of most of the injuries that plague the equine athlete. Most of these treatments are designed to find and treat the source of the injury and not the symptom.

We have found that most of the most common injuries are caused by something that is not even associated with the area of injury. This is accomplished in most cases while the horse is still in training or exercising.  In fact, the therapeutic value of the treatment is increased during light exercise.

Inflamed tissue exhibits an increase in bioelectric impedance due to oxygen and blood supply depletion. EQUI-STIM LEG SAVER®’s waveform polarizes the cellular membranes causing an ionic dissociation in the local fluids resulting in an increased transport of nutrients to and wastes from the cell.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an important energy molecule required for cellular regeneration. Ngok Cheng M.D. (1982) applied micro currents in the range of 100 to 500 uA and discovered increases of ATP, glycine incorporation and aminoisobutyric acid uptake in the proteins of living tissue. No affects on DNA metabolism were found indicating that stimulatory and inhibitory effects on protein synthesizing activity occur independently of an effect on transcriptional processes.

Under EQUINE MULTI-WAVE CURRENT stimulation a gradient is produced when electrons at the cathode react with water molecules to form hydroxyl ions, while at the anodic side, protons are formed. As a result a proton and voltage gradient are established across the intervening tissues between the electrodes.

The influence of the electric field and the concentration difference produce a proton current that moves from anode to cathode. Since the rate of proton formation at the anodic interface is equal to the rate of proton consumption at the cathodic interface, the net pH of the system, medium and tissue, remains undisturbed. As the migrating protons reach the mitochondrial membrane-bound H+-ATPase, ATP is formed.

Equine Multi-Wave Current has also shown stimulatory effects on glycosaminoglycan synthesis in articular chondrocytes. Research by Thomas, M. and colleagues (1995), on osteoarthritis, has demonstrated significant effect for treating OA of the knee.

To simplify for the average horse person the LEG SAVER uses the Ting Point like an electrical socket it starts the Electric Flow through the Ting Point and the corresponding meridian acts as an electrical extension cord. 

The current flows along the meridian to the corresponding organ i.e. the liver. 

The electrical current then stimulates the liver tissue with the Equine Fluctuating Multi-Current and brings the liver back into balance.

The micro-current that passes along the meridian is also treating all muscles and other tissues that that particular meridian runs through.

This is why the Ting Point therapy is so important.

POWER SOURCE.
The LEG SAVER is powered by a rechargeable lithium battery and comes with a 12 volt - 500 milli-amp adapter. Forty to sixty hours of use is possible before recharging is required. There is no memory so you can charge it at any time. I personally recharge every 3 days. The transformer supplied must be used for charging.

WHAT DOES THE LEG SAVER DO & HOW?

The LEG SAVER accelerates healing by stimulating TING POINTS and meridians associated with the appropriate organ or area of injury. THE LIVER CANNOT PROCESS EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF BLOOD. 

THIS BLEEDING CREATES OTHER HEALTH PROBLEMS INCLUDING HOOF AND MUSCLE PROBLEMS.

This is the most amazing performance enhancing treatment that the racehorse can receive with or without Lasix.

Treating the racehorse with lasix to stop and control bleeding in the lungs is very common in North America. We have treated over 800 horses for bleeding through lasix with a success rate of over 95%. We generally treat the horse the day before a race.

The LEG SAVER will stop the bleeding and strengthen the lungs by directly treating them using the Lung Ting Points as well as GV-10 & the Bai Hui. This treatment strengthens and repairs the horse’s lungs tissues with oxygen-enriched blood.  Asthma and other lung disorders are also eliminated.

We have started to treat the lungs the day after the race as well as the day before and found that this strengthens the lung even more.

CONTAMINATED HAY MAY ALSO CAUSE LUNG BLEEDING (EIPH)
If the Bleeding continues you should have the hay or alfalfa checked for parasites and toxins. This is very a very common problem if you are feeding hay that is irrigated by sprinklers.  Most farmers fertilize while irrigating with sprinklers.  Fertilizers are not good for horses.  They cause many problems with performance horses.  If you are having a lot of problems with EIPH in your Race Horses and unable to control it in any way you must have forage analyzed by a Laboratory.

CHRONIC HIND LIMB SORENESS & LAMENESS
Though the experts claim that the forelegs are involved in 95% of the lameness cases, it should be remembered that these front-end problems are related to horses’ compensating for hind limb pain. Problems with the, TROCHANTERIC BURSA, TYING-UP, SACROILIAC, SEMI-TENDINOSIS (HAMSTRINGS), STIFLES. HOCKS and the BAI HUI are the main causes of hind limb pain. Treat all of these problems successfully with the LEG SAVER cost effectively.

WHIRL BONE OR TROCHANTERIC BURSA
This treatment is very successful in treating the symptoms of stifle and hock soreness. If you keep the Bursa pain free there will be less stress and pounding on the stifle and hock joints. We have upgraded this treatment by adding another 4 to 6 more pads on the hind end.  The spinal chord is coming into play with this treatment. We also have great treatments for the hock and stifle.

SUPER SACROILIAC
This is a great treatment for that hard to find and rehabilitate hind end soreness.  This is our latest hindquarter treatment that really solves a lot of short stepping on one leg and action related to the hind end.  We are also quite confident that this eliminates a many hock and stifle problems if the sacroiliac joint is kept pain free.  Treat the HUNTER BUMP and relieve the pain.

SEMI-TENDINOSIS  (HAMSTRINGS)
The best horses are prone to this type of problem. We have been able to diagnose this problem and remove the soreness with one treatment. These problems will reoccur after every race or strenuous workout. The treatment is very easy to apply and the horse will respond in a very positive way.

STIFLE
The Stifle treatment, which is very new, is one of our most successful treatments for rear end soreness.  We have found that young horse develop very sore stifles if they have a sore whirl bone.  The sore whirl bone puts a great deal of pressure on the stifle muscle if it is not treated early.  This has been our most difficult treatment to be successful at.  The problem was how to hold the pads in the place where they would be the most effective.  We have started to use medical adhesive for gluing the pads onto the inside of the stifle muscle.  Most stifle problems are soft tissue so the unique micro-current developed by the LEG SAVER works great.  This treatment is really successful at relieving the pain and rehabilitating the Stifle fast and efficiently.

HOCKS
Treating the lower joint of the hock with the LEG SAVER will really help the rehabilitating of the hock very successfully without injecting.  Painting the hock before treating with 99% DMSO or DMSO gel makes the treatment dramatically better.  Lameness in the Hock is a symptom and you must treat the rear end soreness before you can remove the soreness in the hock.
 
OTHER FORMS OF REAR SORENESS
We have developed five main treatments to eliminate hindquarter soreness successfully. The treatments are Tying-up, Trochanteric bursa, Semi-tendinosus (hamstrings), Bai Hui, Sacroiliac and Stifle.  We have very simple instructions showing you where all these points are and how to treat them. If you keep these areas pain free you will eliminate most front limb lameness of all types. We are achieving over a 95% success rate in treating all of these difficult problems.

ALL FOUR OF THE ABOVE ARE THE MAIN CAUSE OF STIFLE AND HOCK PROBLEMS IN STANDARDBRED RACE HORSES. WHEN A HORSE CANNOT STRIDE PROPERLY WITH HIS HIND LIMBS THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF STRESS AND COMPRESSION ON BOTH THE HOCK AND STIFLE.

FAST RELEIF OF TYING-UP (AZOTURIA)

CHECK LIGAMENTS
Diagnosing the problem is the most difficult for anyone, Veterinarian or others. When people cannot find the problem they quite often blame the lameness on the check ligament. Most check ligaments are caused by rear end soreness. This is a very difficult injury to treat and diagnose. Ask any veteran horse person.

We have developed a very simple treatment that creates blood flow into the ligaments and tendons of the foreleg. If your horse has check ligament problems I will guarantee you that it also has a very painful Trochanteric Bursa or Semi-tendinosus muscles. The check ligament can be diagnosed by the examination of the horse's front leg. When a horse over exerts itself it will probably strain the Trochanteric Bursa or the Semi-tendinosus muscle.

The horse will let you know if he has any of the problems by you probing with a simple pressing of the thumb or finger in the two specific areas. If you can catch the check ligament early you will save yourself a lot of time and effort. To catch it early means you can repair it in days or weeks not months. When treating this injury, patience is required.  Keeping the Trochanteric Bursa & Semi-tendinosus muscles pain free you will eliminate the problem reoccurring. After every treatment of the check ligament always ice for 30 minutes.

BOWED TENDONS & TORN OR DROPED SUSPENSORY
We have had a tremendous success treating and rehabilitating Bowed Tendons and injured suspensory ligaments. The check ligament treatment is the same treatment that we use for the Bowed Tendon.

The LEG SAVER treats the injury by running the EQUINE MULTI MICRO-CURRENT up the inside of the tendons and ligaments in the rear of the leg from the rear of the pastern to just above the knee. This increases blood flow inside the entire tendon that accelerates healing. When the injury is low at the rear of the fetlock we start with Bowed Tendon treatment and add the fetlock wrap with the second set of wires with two large electro pads.

We place the pads in the Fetlock wrap so they are running up from the sesamoids with the pads running vertically up the tendons on both sides treating the lower part of the ligaments and tendons. The horse should be walked while being treated. When treating Bowed Tendons and injured suspensory never stop exercising, just cut back and progressively increase in length and intensity. The length of time of this treatment should be from 2 to 6 hours per day. 

Always ice for one hour after treatment. We have used the automated walking machines, which allow us to treat for hours while the horse is in motion.

EMBRYONIC STEM CELLS IN EQUINE TENDON INJURIES
This is the latest attempt at rehabilitating the dreaded Bowed Tendon in performance horses.  Our clients have informed us that it is very expensive and really did not work.  They had the operation performed on their horses but it failed.

Before you take the path of Embryonic Stem Cell on your bowed tendon you should consider the Leg Saver Bowed tendon treatment protocol.  If you do you will have your horse’s tendon issues resolved.  To be successful with this injury you have to make the effort and have the patience.   It really works very well.

You do not have any down time as you keep your horse exercising while you are rehabilitating the tendon.  The Leg Saver creates blood flow inside of the tendon, which is why it is so successful.

FETLOCK AND KNEE INJURIES:
The LEG SAVER stimulates the healing of most fetlock and knee problems dramatically (not bone chips).  It also increases the density of the fluid in fetlocks and knees, which means more lubrication to the joint. We have treated fractured splint bones and slab fracture of the knee in thoroughbred racehorses very successfully, in fact they continued to race and win.   Speeding up the mending of fractured bones in professional athletes as well as horses was one of the first successes for the LEG SAVER.   Osslets can be treated very successfully using the LEG SAVER along with DMSO gel in Days.  The Osslet will actually disappear in time.

HOOF DISEASE AND LAMENESS: WE DRAMATICALLY INCREASE BLOOD FLOW TO THE HOOF AND MORE.
The injured hoof is the most difficult part of the horse to treat. The LEG SAVER will repair any hoof problem successfully, sometimes in hours. Treating lameness in the fetlock, tendons and ligaments has been very successful. We have found that by adding a second set of wires and treating the hoof at the same we are accelerating the blood flow to the hoof, which increases the flow of blood to the inflamed area higher up the leg. We have added this extra treatment for the standard protocol for treating front leg lameness.  To accelerate the healing when treating the fetlock, trim the hair off where the pads are placed.  The closer to the skin you place the electrodes the better the treatment.

EPIGLOTTIC ENTRAPMENT
This is our latest treatment that our customers and we are finding a great deal of success with.  They are actually winning races with horses that could not perform at all because of the breathing problems.

DAMAGE TO THE POL & NECK
This treatment is very simple and effective.  If you horse is carrying his head crooked or off to one side he or she has damaged her Pol and needs it rehabilitated.  Some times a horse will panic when tied up to a secure or unmovable object and pulled away with a great deal of force and thus damage his Pol.  You just need to place two pads on each side of the neck just behind the ears and on each side of the bridle path.  The Triple Heater Ting Point is also treated at the same time.   You can also use the Bladder or Gall Bladder Ting Points.

OSSLETS
Killing the OSSLET takes only a few treatments.  They do not reoccur in 95% of the cases.  

BUCKED SHINS & POPPED SPLINTS
Bucked shins are an annoying problem with younger horses. Just when you are ready or close to racing the shins will become sore. Sometimes they will buck out completely when training out of the starting gate.  You can now shorten the recovery time fast and efficiently.  We treat the entire shin with the LEG SAVER at the first sign and its over in days. Badly bucked shins take a week or more.  Always check for hindquarter soreness when dealing with buck shins.  If the shins do not respond quickly we treat the Kidney Ting Point to accelerate the healing.

Popped splints are rehabilitated very quickly without a lot of work.

HORSES HEALTH

COLIC
We have treated only a limited number of horses, (6) all completely recovered. They were all walked for several hours while being treated. We treat the Stomach & Large Intestine Ting Points for an hour or until the patient starts to show improvement. We also recommend giving the horse a couple of ounces of whisky with mineral oil to speed up the process.

OPEN WOUND & PROUD FLESH
The treatment accelerates the healing process by killing infection and increasing blood flow to the wounded area.

ABSCESSES
We have been very successful in treating abscesses in racehorses in the neck and knee area. They have all been cured in a matter of days. The LEG SAVER is able to draw the infection out quickly in a day or two and when the swelling is down and the healthy scab forms the problem is over. We always keep training and exercising during treating. Keep the regular exercise program continuing as we feel this is part of the healing process. Most of the time the abscesses form from a previous open injury or dirty syringe. Some of these abscesses develop up to a year after the initial injury.  When treating a severe abscess or old wound you should treat for tying-up at the same time to accelerate the healing. We have found the infection can really be debilitating to a horse as his immune system is trying to fight the infection. When you treat for tying-up, the kidney, liver & spleen are cleaned out allowing the horses body to recover faster.

The power pack is placed on the horse with a harness and girth strap with a pocket that holds the machine on either side.

Then a lead wire is placed into one of the two outlets. You can use two sets of wires at a time.

There are a variety of leg wraps to hold the wires & pads in place. At the other end of the wires you will attach two of the different types of rubber Electro pads.

There is Electro gel that must be placed on the pads so the unique therapeutic waveform will penetrate the hair on the patient.
